Monday, May 31st - The lilly

I admit that I didnt do the lilly completely, and its a bad way to end the month. I omitted from doing the stamens because I dont have any glue.... If i had done the stamens I reckon it would have been a lot better. Never mind hey?

Friday, May 28th, Saturday May 29th and Sunday May 30th - The baby elephant

The baby elephant was a two day job, which i did in one dat because I left my origami to pile up till bank holiday monday and then had to do it or risk giving up totally on my blog.
Anyway, it was hard core. The last step involved blowing it up, which I failed up, it just wouldnt work. I ended up placing the un-blown up head on the body. When I took the picture, it actually looked a little more like a baby elephant than I initially thought. Its kind of a little big planet style baby elephant.

Thursday, May 27th - The rectangular box

The rectangular box took me an hour and a half to do. One reason was that I was on the phone for an hour half way through doing the rectangular box. The other reason is because the instructions were rubbish and I did the folds all wrong. I did manage to salvage it. It looks a little wonky though.

Wednesday, May 26th - the parrot

Dont get too excited. The parrot I made is rubbish. Again, completely unmotivated and this time, it showed. There were too many reverse folds and all that jazz. I kind of gave up at the nose. I scrunched it up for effect

Tuesday, May 25th - The spiked tray

The spiked tray was very fiddly and complicated. I also kind of lost motivation about half way through when I realised I was making a spiked tray. To be fair im not terribly motivated about anything at the moment.
Its surprisingly good considering I couldnt be bothered

Monday, May 24th - The gecko head

This is the second post where I feel the need to clarify what my origami is trying to represent (see the trout). This is what a gecko should look like:Now I feel the need to explain why I picked this particular gecko. Its the meanest, evilest looking one I could find.
The gecko head also looks mean and evil. But it doesnt look much like a gecko, unfortunately. Now maybe I should take into account the fact that it was designed by a twelve year old (yes, really) and not slam the gecko head too much, but I cant help it. It doesnt look like a gecko.

Sunday 23 May 2010

Friday, May 21st, Saturday May 22nd and Sunday May 23rd - The iris

The iris started with the frog base. I hate the frog base. I mean really hate. Its annoying, fiddly and once youve done it youre so tired you cant be bothered to keep going. When I did decided to keep going it got even worse. The folds were even fiddlier and it got even more annoying. It does kind of look like an iris though. An evil, meat eating iris.

Thursday, May 20th - the propellar hat

The propellar hat was disappointing. Mainly because the propellar wasnt big enough. Also slightly because propellar hats should be blue red green and yellow, mine was just light green and white.
It was relatively easy to make though, which was nice. Just a little pointless as it doesnt fit on a head and the propellar is rubbish.

Wednesday, May 19th - Ducky

Before I talk about origami, I have to remind anyone who grew up in the nineties of something amazing: the land before time. Yes indeed i can hear you all go "i loved that!!! it was soooo good!!!" and yes it was. The sequels werent as good, obviously, but the original is a classic.
And that brings me nicely into today's origami: ducky. I personally think that my ducky looks a little more like the land before time ducky than the picture. And considering there was lots of cutting and folding specific lengths with no indication of the actual length that I was supposed to be cutting or folding, Im impressed that I managed. Go me!

Tuesday, May 18th - The jacket

I expect certain things from jackets. The first is that it should look like a jacket. Mine doesnt. Now thats partly my fault (ive just realised I actually forgot to do two fold), but it also isnt a very good jacket. The second thing i expect from a jacket is holes for the arms. There are none. This is a jacket, figuratively speaking. No more.

Monday, May 17th - The ostrich

The ostrich is pretty cool. However, due to their lack of clarity, my ostrich's head was very low down so I had to slightly adjust the position of its head because I felt sorry for it.
Also the picture seems to point to you being able to stand up your ostrich at the end, but it only has one leg and it seems to be quite unevenly balanced so Im just going to assume that the picture is false advertising.

Sunday 16 May 2010

Friday, May 14th, Saturday May 15th and Sunday May 16th - The tutu

The tutu does not need three days to make. It needs one. The frog did need two, and I was only given one for it.
The tutu was just a whole load of accordion folds (fold forward fold backward fold forward fold backward) and then some magically pulling out of bits and then folding over and tada!!!.
Seriously I was actually surprised when I opened it out. I like it when I get a nice surprise at the end of an origami session. It makes me want to keep going....

Thursday, May 13th - The frog

Apologies for the delay, but I am now back. And I am extremely impressed with myself for actually bothering to do origami tonight. I suddenly got an urge to just get the frog over and done with.
You see, the frog involves doing the frog base, which I hate, after one attempt. Today, I decided to do the frog base nice and slowly and see whether I could improve.
I successfully folded to frog base, go me.Then I had to do the frod. Suuuuuuuuuuuper complicated and so not worth the effort. The best bit was that it was one of those origami creations you have to blow into to make it work. Only problem is that with the frog, you have to blow into its bottom to make it a frog. DEFINITELY not tasteful.
Do you remember that scene in shrek, where they blow into the frog to make it into a balloon? that was ok. This was not.
And the end product? not a frog.

Wednesday, May 12th - The frog base

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you my 100th post!!!

Ok so lets talk about the frog base. Ohhhh dear oh dear. I cant seem to do the frog base. It is incredibly complicated. It has 10 steps. And thats ten fake steps. In reality it has more like 22 steps. And I cant do it. Its too fiddle for my injured finger, and faaar too annoying. The problem is that tomorrow's task is the frog itself.
Luckily for me, I am working late tomorrow and coming home late, therefore will not be able to do tomorrows tomorrow. And as for the weekend, I am migrating south for the weekend so no origami then either. Woooooo!!!!
Ill have lots of catching up to do next week.Booooooooooooo

Tuesday, May 11th - The zebra

Or..... the sausage dog.
Im not doing very well this week. Yesterday's butterfly was not a resounding success and today's zebra really doesnt look like a zebra... oops.
The problem is, and you'll laugh at me for this, that they didnt give me measurements to tell me where to put two folds, they just drew two lines and expected me to understand. So, I guessed.
You know what happens when i guess by now hey? I get it miles wrong. My zebra's body was far too long.
Id also like to point out that my right index finger is injured today, making life more difficult.

Monday 10 May 2010

Monday, May 10th - The butterfly

I dont like the butterfly. Its not pretty. And it involved folding things with a 1.3cm gap. And the last fold was annoying and it made my butterfly ugly.
All in all not a good origami day.
On the bright side my phone's predictive text has the wonderful habit of changing origami to profanity, making for some rather amusing conversations.

Sunday 9 May 2010

Friday, May 7th, Saturday May 8th and Sunday May 9th - the flower stem

The flower stem is a stem for the blossom I previously folded. Now its an ok stem, but the picture provided is misleading as there is no way the flower fits in in that way and the leaf sticks out like that.
I also realised I used the instructions to make the blossom to make the stem. When I need to make blossom again I will have to dig through my origami shoe box and find the stem, unfold it and make blossom. The weekend activity was to make blossom and stems, stick it on a mother's day card and give it to a mother. Now the only miniature issue with this is that this calendar refers to mothers day as american/australian mother's day, not british mother's day, that was soooo two months ago.
some may argue at this point that as my mother is australian i should celebrate australian mother's day, and indeed i have just remembered to wish her happy australian mother's day (happy mother's day, again, mummy), but since her british mothers day card got lost in the post and she only got it two weeks ago, i dont feel she needs another card yet.
I think french mother's day is next month, ill send her one for that one, if i remember.

Thursday, May 6th - The flower blossom

Does anyone else think blossom is a funny word. Apart from describing the flowers on trees, it is also a common name for a small, fat pony.

Anyway, making origami flower blossom is delightfully easy. I liked it. I think I might keep these instructions. I say this once in a while but i really dont know when im ever gonna get the chance to actually make origami flower blossom again.....

Wednesday 5 May 2010

Wednesday, May 5th - The pig

The pig's pretty cool. Although the first instruction was start with a pig base, and it wasnt exactly a pig base. And step three wasnt a step at all....
But all in all it looks like a pig and its relatively simple to make. Those are the two criteria for good origami in my books (not that all origami has to look like a pig, but that it should look like what its supposed to).

Tuesday 4 May 2010

Tuesday, May 4th - The pig base, or the big footed bird with feet

Today's task was to make the pig base, which also served as the feet for the bird i made yesterday.
The pig base is just like the boat base, except slightly backwards. i did work out by the doing the pig base what i was doing wrong with the boat base.
Anyway, now my bird has feet.

Monday 3 May 2010

Monday, May 3rd - Big foor bird... with no feet

So today I had to make something called a big foot bird. Eventually, it will be a bird with big feet. Today, it is just a bird.
The instructions were pretty complicated, and when they look complicated I always end up making it even more complicated. I did that today. I was trying to fold something that was impossible to fold. I eventually worked out that it wasnt possible and went back to folding the required folds.
The feet will be folded tomorrow. It seems silly to name something if its not like that straight away. They should have put part one. That would have satisfied me....

Sunday 2 May 2010

Saturday, May 1st and Sunday May 2nd - Dino part two

Yay for May!!!
Ok, so dino part two was easier than dino part one. The only problem I had was that i forgot to pay attention to the instructions. So I had to fold one side, then fold the other side. I folded one side twice, and was wondering why it looked strange for quite a while.
You see while i was folding I was thinking about a film, Stepmom (which i have seen about 50 times, no joke). In it the kid is learning to be a magician and he gets the mum to rip a card up over and over again. I always think of that scene when i have to fold the same bit over and over again. I think thats why i got distracted and folded it wrong.
I think i might watch stepmom again soon......
Oh and the end product, once I'd folded it right, looks pretty cool. Im impressed with it. I think i made the neck a teeny bit too long though...

Friday, April 30th - Dino part 1

Usually I combine the two-parters into just one story, and Ill admit I did it all in one go. But this is actually a very nice two parter, I was impressed.
Dino part one involved making the body of the dino. I had to start with a boat base. Now it's sunday, and i havent done any origami wince wednesday, so I did it all in one go. As soon as I had done the boat base, I went on to dino part one. Problem: I had already forgotten how to do the boat base. I had to go digging through the cards to find out how to make it again.
Theres lots of crazy folds in dino part one. One of them involves folding, then folding back, then tucking in or something. I never quite got it, but I did my best and it came out looking alright.
I was quite impressed in the end with my dino body.

Thursday, April 29th - The boat base

The bases are getting increasingly complicated. It takes me about five minutes to get the base done, and then i know that Ill have to do more to actually do something that looks good (although mine dont ever really look that great).
You see the problem I have is that I don't remember how to do the bases once I've done them, so I keep having to refer back to the card. If i cant remember how to make a base, how am I ever going to remember how to make anything more complicated?
